7 Questions for Your Memoir
First, a definition: The memoir is a particular genre which is enjoying tremendous popularity these days, with readers as well as writers, as so many of us are looking back and asking what it all meant. So before you begin, make sure you understand what a memoir is and what it is not. First, the NOT: A memoir is NOT a recounting, in order, of life events. That book might be described as an autobiography, or even a journal. In the world of literature, a true memoir is a form in which a writer will use select life events in service of a larger theme or idea.
For example, in Educated, Tara Westover survives a grueling childhood only to wonder if and how she can keep her abusive parents in her life. Ultimately, she answers that question. The Glass Castle, by Jeannette Walls, poses a similar question and a similar answer. In Wild, we follow Cheryl Strayed’s journey on the Pacific Crest Trail, but we’re more concerned with her reckoning of past misdeeds and desire to start anew.
Once you’re ready to begin your memoir, take a look at these seven questions. You won’t be able to answer them right away. The writing process itself will reveal the answers. That’s why we write in the first place.
1. What story in your life serves a greater purpose? That others can learn from?
2. Who do you care about in this story?
3. In the context of this story, what is the Inciting Incident? The moment the story gets started?
4. In the context of this story, when do you realize you must take action?
5. What mistake(s) do you make along the way?
6. In the context of this story, what is your lowest moment? (Dark Night of the Soul)
7. As a result of the events in this story, what lesson do you learn? (Theme)
If you can’t answer all of these questions, do not fear! Writing is a process of discovery. By starting this work, you are well on your way to answering the big questions. If you need help, feel free to contact me.
